Mechanics of Politics, Beacon, NY2005

There are moments when you just decide you must do "something".

This exhibition features artists who are addressing the nature and consequences of politics. In their work, they explore matters of great concern to all of us. It is our hope that this exhibition will bring attention to such issues and perhaps motivate action.

All of the artists in this show have accepted the challenge of making art that is intended to have an impact in the larger world. Their works address a wide variety of topics:
  • the recent violations of our civil liberties
  • the prevalence of corruption and deceit among politicians
  • the persistence of poverty in our nation
  • the difficulties faced by our immigrant populations
  • the consequences of our failure to adequately protect the environment
  • the power of mass media to distort and mislead
  • the emotional impact of war
  • the problematic nature of proposed changes to our voting machines
The artists in this exhibition range in age, background and ethnicity. They employ a variety of mediums, from traditional oil painting to video, from sculpture to a loan of a voting machine by the Putnam County Board of Elections.

All are impassioned with the need for change.
